TLDR: Did you hear "AI safety is a hoax, a coordinated psyop by shadowy mega donors?" That was pushed by... a coordinated op funded by shadowy megadonors. "Dozens of accounts became full-time posters accusing those worried about AI of being doomers, cultists, woke, or part of a hoax/psyop. Many of these accounts have direct links to industry front groups fighting AI regulation full-time, including the $140 million OpenAI/a16z super PAC, and the $100 million White House-aligned Innovation Council Action." "Another major poster in this messaging campaign has been Jordan Schachtel. Schachtel is a political consultant who was once recorded on a secret camera admitting to running undisclosed social media campaigns on behalf of The Israel Project. He now publishes a Substack, The Dossier, that advertises “independent investigative reporting,” which has mostly focused on AI and doomers in recent months, seemingly on behalf of Innovation Council Action. In fact, his first Substack piece attacking the AI safety movement, which he described as “thought control,” appeared on Feb. 26, two days after Innovation Council Action created its Twitter account. This doesn’t seem like a coincidence. He previously listed Innovation Council Action on his LinkedIn and has been identified in the media as the group’s senior policy adviser. All signs suggest that he is producing content as part of his work with the group (although he once denied it in a suspiciously now-deleted tweet)." "Other major names participating include Peter Hasson, Brian Chau, Perry Metzger, and Guillaume Verdon (Beff Jezos), all of whom are or have been affiliated with Alliance For The Future — a 501(c)(4) advocacy group that has taken industry-friendly positions and opposed regulation, although it hasn’t disclosed its donors and the nature of its funding is unclear."
